The downside may be that if the Club's top 2 players join forces, would that prevent others from taking part; thinking it's they are too difficult to beat?

I feel that the Mens doubles, as it is, should continue as a Gents Doubles Plate type event and the Gents Doubles title should be decided by an event where each player can choose their own partner.
